Opinion: Support the Hopedale Town Hall Renovation

An article in The Milford Daily News on the most recent forum on the proposed Town Hall Renovation brings two important elements of the proposal into focus.  First, the committee, capably led by Ed Burt, has worked closely with professional planners to submit a proposal that is very well researched and promises to offer the town an excellent value.  Second, as summarized by Finance Committee Chairwoman Karla Hopkins, the timing is right to make this investment.  With the debt service on Memorial School coming to an end and borrowing rates at historic lows, we can renovate Town Hall without seeing any increase in our taxes.  As Ed Burt’s committee has made perfectly clear, renovations are not a question of “if” but “when” and waiting for another day will very likely increase the cost as the building continues to deteriorate (leading to more expensive solutions) and borrowing costs rise (virtually inevitable).

The April 30 election and the May Town Meeting have clearly demonstrated that every vote counts and important decisions can hinge on 10-20 votes.  Voters get to weigh in on the proposed renovations to Town Hall on Tuesday, June 18 at 7pm at the high school.
